Our latest Our People Awards winners

We are delighted to be able to share with the winners for the latest round of Our People Awards. We had had some really great nominations and our judges had some tough decisions to make. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.

Chair’s Special Award – McCallum ward, Torbay Hospital

For embracing the opportunity to learn as they go in the transformation of the ward from a medical ward to a ‘Ready to Go’ enabling ward. Throughout the process the team have really adopted a culture of positive risk taking to explore and test concepts, adapt to staff/ patient feedback and trial a range of ideas. As a result of their continuous learning the team are taking the success of their 30 days of the test of change in their stride (including pre-noon and pre-5pm discharge figures and patient experience responses) and stretching to see what more they can achieve.

We are a team – Young adult diabetes service

For establishing and developing a new service for young adults (16-27 years old) diagnosed with Type 1, Type 2 and Monogenic diabetes – providing flexible and responsive support using traditional and non-traditional engagement methods as well as fundraising in their own time to help fund the cook and eat sessions, educating our young adults on meal planning, food preparation, carbohydrate counting and injecting insulin safely, providing peer support groups and social events. They work together to help those who are moving into their own accommodation for the first time, by supplying basic kitchen essentials so they can prepare and cook a healthy meal.

We are safe and healthy – Dr Louise Webster, associate specialist anaethesia

For promoting proactively leading our work to address the adverse environmental impact of anaesthetic, surgical and theatre care while also playing a critical role in the serious allergy diagnosis and management service for patients at Torbay Hospital.

We are always learning – Deborah Howland, specialist head and neck dietitian, specialist ICU dietitian and acute team lead

For always keeping up to date with innovations in dietetics across the discipline, not only limited to her specialist field. Regularly bringing newly published research papers to the attention of the acute team and department as a whole – encouraging peers to bring topics of their own interest to discussion, promoting a culture of learning and excellence. Most recently she has undertaken the setting up a of a ‘taste clinic’ to support patients with taste changes that affect their ability to eat and their enjoyment of food. This has been based on research undertaken in Germany and has involved the procurement of a specialist taste testing kit and discussions directly with the team that ran the study.

We are compassionate and inclusive – International Education Team

For supporting all of our international nurses from their onboarding through to their first shift in their new substantive role and beyond. They have not only pioneered a new approach to this support, education and pastoral offer that goes well above their role as educators – the exceptional part is that they set up, plan and provide social events to bring our internationally educated nurses and their families from all cohorts form the past years together and do this in their own time.

Highly commended – Jane Harris, associate director of communications and partnerships

We work flexibly – Steve Leach, facilities assistant

Fornot only keeping the environment immaculate but always going above and beyond to support visitors and patients who need help and guidance when they are at the reception desk – providing signposting, sourcing wheelchairs and ensuring that everyone leaves feeling that they have been welcomed and supported.

Highly commended – Samantha Donaldson, admin team leader, ophthalmology

We each have a voice that counts – Podiatry team, Torbay Hospital

For responding to feedback by co-designing a staff charter to reflect what they feel are good and non-acceptable standards of behaviour aligned to each of the trust values. Putting the team at the centre, the charter was developed to focus on what matters to the team and help ensure people feel their voice counts, is listened, and acted on. The charter was created with each staff member taking part in several focus groups, being able to hold open and non-judgemental dialogue.

Highly commended Dr Nicola Burke, SAS doctor and SAS tutor and advocate
