Throughout August, adult hypo boxes are being re-launched.
Please use the hypo box for treatment of all hypoglycaemic episodes in patients.
The diabetes and pharmacy teams will be present on wards throughout the month to promote this and provide support to all staff.
The contents of the hypo boxes have been updated, so please ensure your hypo box contains:
- 3 x Lift glucojuice shot
- 1 x Lift glucotabs
- 2 x 20% IV 100ml vials
- 1 x glucagon kit*
- 1 x Algorithm & contents card
- 3 x Hypo Episode Record forms
*Please note that the current brands of glucagon in use are Ogluo and GlucaGen – pharmacy will supply whichever brand is currently in stock.
A daily check has also been introduced to ensure that the contents is correct and in date at all times – the daily check template will have been emailed to all ward/unit managers. This template can also be obtained from either the diabetes or medicines governance team.
We suggest that you nominate one or two staff members in your area to be responsible for this daily check.
We also want to highlight the location of the hypo box in all areas to ensure that staff members are aware of where it is stored so it can be accessed quickly when needed.
Posters will be put up in your treatment area to display the specific storage location.
Please also familiarise yourself with the hypoglycaemia policy – G0269 (Please note: the Ogluo brand of glucagon should NOT be stored in the fridge).
